Star of Bethlehem

Ornithogalum umbellatum

This member of the Lily family sports white flowers in flat-topped clusters each measuring ½ to ¾ inch (1.3 to 1.9 cm) long, with a green stripe on their backside. The flowers open only in sunshine. The leaves are grass like and have a white, or pale green stripe down the middle as well. The escapee from old gardens was introduced from Europe and is found in yards, roadsides and open woodlands. Plants reach heights of 4 to 12 inches (10.2 to 30.5 cm) and bloom in May.
