Thimbleweed 

(aka Tall Anemone)


Anemone virginiana 

This hairy member of the Buttercup family sports 3 to 9, greenish, petal-less flowers 3/4 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) wide [sometimes white flowers 1 to 1 1/2 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) wide] atop a long-stalked stem. Flowers have 4 to 9 (usually 5) petal-like sepals with numerous pistils and stamens. Plants have 1 to 3 stalks above a circle of 3 sharply toothed, heavily veined, compound leaves. The fruiting "thimble" is 3/4 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) long. Plants are 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 m) tall  and are found in rocky woods and banks and thickets. Flowers bloom from June to Aug.
