WTC Memorial & Rebuilding idea

(conceived & distributed by e-mail & regular mail: March-April'2002; posted here: July 18, 2002)

In my mind there is no doubt that SIMILAR in height [as the old] TALL STRUCTURES should be rebuilt in the same spot in order to show that HUMANITY WILL NEVER BE INTIMIDATED BY THE EVIL AND THE TERROR IN THIS WORLD - not only in defiance to the last two, but also because (simply put) ... never mind what, LIFE IS GOING ON!

-----------------------------

The BASIC IDEAS:

1) Keep the hallmark tops of NY's needle-like skyscraper buildings, like of Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, Woolworth Building, etc.;

2) Keep the hallmark feature of the Twin Towers - the closely positioned external columns - united (3 in 1) at ground level (lobby) floors;

3) Keep and even surpass the height of the old WTC herein proposed approximately 450 meters ... The gradual increase in height of the four towers, and their round form will permit the new buildings complex to INTEGRATE ITSELF among the surrounding buildings BETTER than the former cubic Twin Towers (see below the sketches of the old and new WTC) ... The round form of the new towers will also permit more sunlight (and longer in time) to penetrate the ground level area;

4) Dedicate the whole 16 acres below (excluding the towers' footprints) to a MEMORIAL PARK under a huge "Munich (Germany) Olympic Center" style transparent canopy with greenery, small monuments (sculptures & debris collected from the "9/11 pile"), water falls, quiet areas, and everything else that is deemed suitable for the purpose ... Under ground will be the new transport-communication hub and other facilities;

5) Provide approximately 5.7 miles (9.2 kilometers) of RAMP - behind a TRANSPARENT FACADE that winds around along the whole height of the truncated cone tower (the tallest of all four) for a MEMORIAL-MUSEUM, which thematically might include:

- THE LIFE OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE WHO PERISHED ... If only this would be the theme, approximately 10 feet (3 meters) long portion of the exhibit will be available for every one of the almost 3000 people gone in this tragedy;

- the life of the HEROES - known and unknown;

- the GOOD vs. EVIL;

- the life of the terrorist-perpetrators with study of the possible reasons that have driven them to this insanity;

- the HOPE FOR BETTER AND PEACEFUL FUTURE;

- Engineering achievements of the Humankind (including explanation of the structural reasons for the WTC collapse) ...

... At several levels along the height of the tower there will be rest areas, cafes, elevator access and Museum-Memorial offices. As it is obvious, it will be more comfortable the exhibition to start from the top going down along the ramp ...

6) Observation decks - open & covered, with multilevel restaurants, COMMUNICATION (TV, radio) and other facilities at the TOP "SATELLITE" BODY of the tower - erected at approximately 450 meters above street level, with antenna above it;

7) The size of the proposed towers will provide slightly fewer OFFICE SPACE, but this (I thing) will be in harmony with the aim to diversify the purpose of Lower Manhattan - not only as a financial district ... The shortest tower, e.g. may go for a HOTEL ...

8) Ramp pedestrian bridges which will enhance the communication between the offices of the towers (will have also structural purpose - read further on) , and of course will provide additional space for people to enjoy the nice views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey, Hudson River and the Harbor ...

-----------------------------

SYMBOLISM:

A) The restored height of the towers as well as the RAMPS (of the Memorial-Museum façade; and of the pedestrian bridges between the towers) will symbolize the UNSTOPPABLE TREND OF HUMANKIND to "reach" the sky, to reach new horizons, to seek the GOOD & KIND - not permitting to be intimidated by the evil in this world ...

B) The TRANSPARENT FAÇADE of the Memorial-Museum Tower will express the openness and SHINE of GOOD in this world ...

C) The repeated hallmark feature of the Twin Towers - the closely positioned external columns - united (3 in 1) at ground level (lobby) floors, will communicate to people the continuation between the old and the new - only "slightly" interrupted (this should be our general attitude) by the events of September 11th ...

-----------------------------

BASIC STRUCTURAL IDEAS:

a) Round (circular) structures provide for better redistriburtion of loads - especially the transversal ones - STRONG COLUMNS CONNECTED WITH STRONG RINGS ... The absence of those RINGS was the reason for the old Twin Towers to burst out under the enormous pressure of their already destroyed upper floors;

b) Round objects interfere less with winds, and will therefore produce less wind forces to withstand ...

c) The towers will be structurally united (and will therefore structurally help each other) by the STRONG PEDESTRIAN RAMP BRIDGES in case of new extreme situations ... These ramps can be very strong truss spirals - trusses in vertical and "horizontal" direction ...
