I also served under Adm Zumwalt and then a Cmd Porter in my time on the Isbell. Under Zumwalt we won every effientcy "E" possible. Great crew at that time. Zumwalt was a great captain. Get there as fast as you could and then go on liberty when you got the e. I now live in Tulsa ,Ok and retired 2 years ago from the machinist business.

I came to the Isbell fresh out of boot camp. I caught her in Subic Bay in November of 1965 and left her for "BEEP" school in San Diego just a few days after we returned to Long Beach in May of 1966. I finished ET-A school at Treasure Island and tried to get reassigned to the Isbell, but was sent to the USS Duncan DDR-874. I made two more cruises aboard the Duncan before returning to civilian live in August of 1969. On the Isbell I got to stencil everything from the chain locker to the ram room and I even got to mess cook for a few months. I stood watches for OI division on the bridge and in CIC. I made many friends on the Isbell many of whom I still remember. The cruise was fast and furious with some great R&R scattered here and there. It was a fitting indoctrination to the Navy.

Just thought I'd check out your site I served on and decommisioned USS Rogers DD-876 and USS Vogelgesang DD-862 so naturally I stop on a dime whenever I see a site dedicated to one of them. I spent 13 yrs. in the navy as a BT1(SW) until an injury ended my career. In those 13 years I served on 6 different ships but none of them hold my heart the way those two Fram cans do.

My first ship, made Seaman & Fireman and EN3 onboard We made a Wespack cruise and weathered a 3 day typhoon in the South China Sea. I was nearly washed overboard when it started, trying to secure 5" brass. I was knocked down twice by fire from the 5" guns once on lookout off San Clemente Island The blast took out all the bridge windows and flattened the Capatin and all on bridge watch, it blew me clear onto the flag locker and my ears rang for three days, the forward gun was trained to the stops when it f red just a few feet from where I was standing. I could, and may write a book about all the things that happen to me in the Navy and on the Izzy.

My first ship right out of "A" school. Went aboard the day after their return from WestPac. EM1 Salsbury was my boss & EM2 Wedge his assistant. My first of many bouts of sea sickness began on our cruise to Mare Island. Went on to retire as EMC in 1979. I ave just finished a book of my navy experiences for my daughters, some of which had to be deleted. It is amazing how much one can remember. My first CO was CDR Zumwalt, whom I met again with in Saigon. Lt. Ralph G Spencer was Eng. Officer. While I was sta ioned at the Nav.War College, Mr Lewis was a student there, and I ran into him again in 1968 aboard the Ajax, anchored off Vung Tao, VN. Saw James Harless in the early 70's at a ship launching in SD. While in Subic in 1970, met LCDR Robert Owens who had een a QM1 in 57/57 aboard Isbell. He was now CO of an ATF. While NZ, Aust. and WestPac was fun, My last cruise aboard H.B.Wilson DDG-7 was filled with the most excitement, with the evacuations in SE Asia and the hi-jacking of a US freighter by the Kyhmer Rouge. I have just had my 2nd retirement (Sony) and plan on getting serious with school. No more "fun" classes.

I came on board the Isbell in March 1965 and was assigned to the deck force. That was a lively group of sailors. Transferred into sick bay as a Hospital Corpsman Apprentice right before the 65-66 WesPac cruise. I was still on board for the 67 WesPac cr ise. Lots of gunfire support on both of those cruises off Viet Nam. It seems like Subic Bay was our home away from home back then. I really enjoyed my time on the Isbell. Hope to hear from other shipmates from that era.

I was an OS2 in working in CIC. I met the ship in drydock in Long Beach. Made the WestPac cruise from Sept. '71 through April '72. I had some great times and made some great friends. I'd be glad to hear from any old shipmates out there.

I was sent to the Isbell right out of boot camp to wait for ET-A school. I caught the ship in Subic Bay in November 1965 and made the entire cruise. Just a few days after returning to Long Beach I went to "BEEP" school in San Diego, then ET-A school at T easure Island. I tried to get back on the Isbell out of school but was assigned to the USS Duncan DDR-874 (they have a great WEB site) where I served out my four year enlistment. I have many great memories of the Isbell. "AJ squared away!" Hello to all my former shipmates.

I was on the Arnold J. Isbell from 1957 to 1960. I was a Fireman. My brother, Seaman Robert C. Broadway was on the ship at the same time. He was on from 1956 to 1960. It was a great experience for us to be on the ship together. We would really enjoy earing from any of our shipmates. Thanks for your site!
