SPECIAL EVENTS STATION CY7TUB

The Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association operated the special events station CY7TUB to commemorate the 32nd annual running of the Nanaimo Bathtub Race. The station was in operation from July 23 to July 26, 1998. Over 250 contacts were made. QSL's should be sent c/o VE7NA or via the bureau.

Forty-one tubs started the 32 mile (51 km) race this year but only 18 finished. Rough seas and mechanical problems took their toll on contestants.

Here are some photos.

A "tubber" is shown in the foreground. He has given up and is heading to Departure Bay. The ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver is in the background.

The spotting chopper flies over the race route. In the foreground at right is the "world's largest bathtub". It is quite seaworthy but is being used as a race marker.
