Zimaths was first discussed in 1995 by two undergraduates, Tawanda Gwena and Dinoj Surendran. It was meant to be a device that would educate Zimbabwean schoolkids about the virtues of real maths, as opposed to the spiceless variety taught in most schools. Tawanda incidentally has left us for the U of Georgia, where he's now working on doctoral studies.
Nearly a year later, half of the maths department at the University of Zimbabwe was involved, thanks to Gavin Hitchcock.
About a quarter of A'level schools in Zimbabwe currently subscribe. Articles tend to be very informative, since most students in Zimbabwe do not have access to extra-syllabus information. But there's still room for good mathie humour and other light-hearted(headed?)ness.
We currently don't have any funding (though some has been promised from mid-1998), but that doesn't bother us. We're kind of like missionaries! So our articles are all free and hopefully well written.
We'd appreciate your comments, articles and maths problems. Criticisms will be prized more than anything else. Especially on the level of our articles. Are they generally too heavy or light? We're aiming at high school students and teachers, remember. And we're wondering whether we should go frames or not. We'd prefer to keep things text-only, since there are still many people out there with slow connections.
