F/A-18 Hornet

The Hornet was designed in the mid-70s as a replacement for US Navy carrierborne F-4 Phantom IIs and A-7 Corsair IIs. While there were initial plans to build two separate aircraft (F-18 as a fighter and A-18 for attack duty), both functions were eventually merged into one design after considerable planning and development. When the A-6 Intruders and F-14 Tomcats have left the inventory, the F/A-18 Hornet alone will represent the Navy's carrier-based strike fighter capability.
