Interests

Hobbies: Archery, Taekwondo, Rollerblading and mountain biking. I also like cricket and swimming, but don't get round to doing them much. I'm really interested in computers and the net. That's why I created this homepage. I don't play games much, but the ones I like are racing games (Need for speed 2, Carmageddon 2) and platform games (Tomb Raider 3). I also like Quake and Quake 2. I like learning new stuff i.e. simple programming etc.
I enjoy going to the pub - like the next man - and just generally hanging out.

Academic: My main interests lie in the biological sciences. I am extremely interested in all current medical research regarding new treatments for common diseases and neurological disorders. This research requires biochemical and pharmocological knowledge, which is what I did my degree in at Leeds University. Although I am interested in the biological sciences, I am also interested in physics quite a lot; especially particle physics. Although tis subject can get rather deep and complicated. Astronomy is extremely intriguing also and I wanted to be an astronomer when I was younger. I then got interested in chemistry and the human body so thought I would pursue biochemistry at University. But when I did my BTEC in science, I got really into in pharmacological/therapeutic drugs. I started my degree in biochemistry and pharmacology in 1997 and graduated in July 2000 with a high 2.2.

I love philosophical conversations about time, different dimensions, faith (but I'm not religious paradoxically enough) etc. I could write loads but I never know where to start and never get round to it.

I recently read a book called Flatland by E.A. Abbott and he tries to explain what it would be like to be a square living in a 2D world with no concept of a third dimension. A sphere from spaceland then tries to explain the concept of the third dimension to the square, which he first finds perplexing. The square gets wrapped up in thought and asks the sphere if he can show him the fourth dimension. The sphere himself finds this idea a bit odd.

Blackholes, the origin of the universe and a "theory of everything" and how the universe will end is really nice to have a quick chat about over a coffee! I've only just heard of the superstring theory, as before I was just content with the standard model: strong and weak nuclear forces and the electromagnetic forces. But this doesn't incorporate gravity; whereas - supposedly - the superstring theory does.

As far as biochemistry goes I'm interested in the production of energy in the cell by a process called oxidative phosphorylation. This is where an electron moves across four protein complexes in the mitochondrial membrane and releases energy for the proteins to pump protons across the membrane. This causes an energetically favourable diffusion gradient. These then diffuse through an enzyme called the F1F0 ATPase or ATP synthase, and regenerates ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate) in the body.

In pharmacology I find G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR's) rather interesting. G-proteins are proteins in the cells membrane that comprise of three subunits: a , b and g. This the system by which the hormones glucagon and adrenaline work. Insulin works by a different system, the much slower, and less understood, Tyrosine kinase receptor, a kind of opposite to the GPCR. It phosphorylates tyrosine residues on the receptor which leads a large cascade of events and ultimately a cellular response.

Music: I listen to music quite a lot, but my taste of music is rather varied. I like a lot of dance tunes and ambient stuff: Jean Michel Jarre, Enigma, Robert Miles, DJ Quicksilver, BBE etc. But I also like "hard" stuff aswell: Korn, Deftones, Rage against the machine. I've always liked instrumental music (songs without words) ever since I was quite young. I'm really into trance and progressive house in kind of a big way. My idols are Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten (System F). I have just short of 50 singles and about 20 albums of dance compilations and albums, with a nice hi-fi to listen to them on. I sometimes like chart music, but it depends what's in the charts at the time.
