MATHEMATICA

Hi. I've been teaching math for almost 30 years, and I'm ready for a change !! I'm not going to stop teaching. I am going to change the way I teach.

Try to solve this problem:

John went for a drive to the beach. When he was about half-way there it started to rain, so he turned back home. If he averaged 50 miles per hour on his way to the beach and 30 miles per hour on his way back, then what was his average speed for the whole trip?

When most of my senior advanced mathematics students could not solve this problem, I knew I was doing something very wrong. (The answer is not 40 mph.) It's time to change.
