"FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEES" 1998

The Flight of the Bumblebees is an annual contest sponsored by the Adventure Radio Society. Participants hike, bike, or paddle to their favourite remote paradise, and try to contact as many other bumblebees and home station participants as possible over a four hour period. My 1998 Bumblebee location (approx 44deg55'N 79deg38'W) was the site of the old Lost Channel firetower (removed many years ago) near the Severn River in Ontario's Muskoka District.

My operating position for BB'98. I'm sitting on the concrete steps which used to lead to the firetower. Equipment used: Index Labs QRP+ (at 4 W o/p), MFJ 971 tuner, iambic paddle with velcro leg straps. Camera bag at left carries all equipment (except the heftier antennas I brought along for this contest!)

I used two antennas: a home-brew portable vertical and a centre-fed zepp (apex only about 15 feet above ground). The footings of the old firetower made excellent guying points for the vertical!

RESULTS

4O meters: 15 QSO's (5 BB's), 20 meters: 41 (17 BB's), 15 meters: 2 (2 BB's), for 7272 points (a really interesting "qrp" score)

Worked 27 states and 3 provinces. Thanks to all who participated!
