I heard that in South Africa they pump all their sewerage out into the desert, to large domes made of something or rather.
These domes are filled with flies, which feed on the shit in the domes and multiply. They break down the shit, in the heat, and this produces methane, which is then used to generate electricity.
I think that the sewerage in the system is eventually used as fertiliser for the desert (just add water).

Now under optimum conditions (heat, enough food & water etc.) 1 pair of flies can apparently beget 176 million or so flies in one year.

Fly larvae are quite nutritious, being about 1/2 protein and 1/2 carbohydrate, a plentiful source of food!

So in the future I can see the possibility of a system which takes in sewerage and water, and produces electricity, compost which can be used to grow vegetable flavourings, and a nutritious foodstuff for the underprivileged.

ButI don't know how to get the maggots out of the sewerage, nor how to clean the sewerage out of them. Someone I know said that their mum used to feed chickens & ducks on maggots, they grew the larvae in meat and then had them clean themselves in sawdust. The chickens where plump and happy. Maybe having another species between us and the nutritious larvae is the way to go?

The other problem is cultural conditioning, I mean who wants to eat maggots? I know I don't! In the wave of the future, though, through advertising and hunger, people could learn to love the stuff.
