Messier Objects

In the late 1700's Charles Messier compiled a list of deep-sky obkects to aid prospective comet-hunters. Some of these objects he discovered himself; some were first seen by astronomers of the day. Messier's cCatalogue provides a selection of teh brightest and best deep-sky wonders in the northern hemisphere. The messier numbers do not follow a neat sequence across the sky. Rather they are numbered in the order he "discovered" them. Messier never did produce a list with entries re-numbered in order across the sky, though that was his intention.
