Charlie's Blog #96: This train wreck…

This train wreck…

1/26/05
Lets think about this train wreck a little more deeply. He wanted to commit suicide and then changed his mind at the last minute. Parked his SUV on the tracks. Says he did not know the kind of destruction it would cause. Ok, perhaps. He may have thought the train would go through his car like it wasn't even there. It's plausible. I myself was taught that in a "contest between a train and a car, the car always loses".

Ten people dead. Lets speculate on the related numbers. Everyone starts with two parents. Lets assume a spouse or significant other. Lets make it a high end estimate and assume three brothers and sisters, and three children. That's probably enough that we don't need to add in anything for grandchildren. I don't even know how to guess a number for dear friends.

So about nine people are "survivors" of each of the deceased. Ninety people, lets round up and say 100. Ten people dead and perhaps 100 whose lives have been irrevocably, permanently, tragically and forever changed. And this is assuming all of the injured will recover…

The bad karma he has brought upon himself is incalculable. The tragedy and suffering of just this single event is beyond words. And this is tiny next to the other recent tragedies. Well, I guess that is the thing -- this disaster is small enough to comprehend. That's why I can't say anything about the Tsunami.

Train wreck
Tsunami
Iraq
Beslan
September 11
Columbine

Multiply the death toll of every tragedy by 10 to get an idea of its real impact. Just think of all the airline crashes.

There are really just no words. None at all.
