The ANARE station on Macquarie Island was established in 1948, a year after the first ANARE station had been established on Heard Island. There are group photographs of every wintering party since then on the Mess wall. However, the first to spend a full winter here were the Macquarie Island Party of Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Two of the five winterers were "wireless" operators who maintained the relay link between the main party at Commonwealth Bay and Australia.

The magnificent Sandell Bay on the rugged West coast and Sawyer Creek, the largest stream on the island are named after the two radio operators, whilst Hamilton, Ainsworth & Blake all have peaks in their names.
Mt. Jeffryes is named after the radio operator who was in Mawson's Antarctic party at Commonwealth Bay.
