We do not usually look this smart - all the rangers were in from the wilds & it was Midwinters Day. Ric (Met Technician) & Graham (Carpenter) were not in this photo as they were still returning from Brothers Point field hut after repairing some heavy wind damage there. There are 27  people spending the year 2000 at Macquarie Island, the largest contingent since the research station was opened in 1948.

The group includes several overseas personnel; Nigel is from England, Kathryn from Canada, Iain from Scotland, Frans is from South Africa & both Kerri-Anne and Keith are from New Zealand. Jean is originally from France, but has lived in Australia for the last 25 years. This is a very experienced wintering group, with most of the crew having spent at least one previous winter in the Antarctic.
