The ANARE research station at Macquarie Island is a unique blend of the old & the new; some station buildings dating back to the original station built in 1948 are still in use. Cumpston's Cottage is the most modern building at the station. It houses the Station Leader's office & 'donga' (Australian Antarctic slang for 'bedroom / private quarters') and bathroom on the ground floor & dongas for Mike (Chef), Alan (Senior Comms / VKØMM) and Adam & Ashleigh, (Diesel Mechanic & Senior Weather Observer). Excess heat from the generators in the powerhouse is piped around the station to heat buildings & most private quarters are equipped with an IDD telephone & LAN outlet. Emergency pharmaceutical & medical supplies are kept in the roof space of Cumpstons Cottage to cover the unlikely event of a fire in the Surgery. The view from the windows of Cumpston's Cottage overlooks Garden Cove & is one of the best on the station. The small building in the background houses the seismic observatory and is also the beginning of the steeep track up to the summit of Wireless Hill. |
