Press Report

Drayton got a mention in the Scottish national newspaper the Daily Record in June 2002. The article as follows:

"Celtic's £3.6 million hitman Chris Sutton has refused to take a rest during his summer break. Instead, he is playing CRICKET for an English village side. The former Chelsea star, who is insured for millions by the Parkhead side, has spent the past two weekends dodging bouncers playing for his dad's local team Drayton in Norfolk. Sutton has not done too bad either - he's scored two centuries in a row. But quite what manager Martin O'Neill thinks of one of his stars risking injury playing cricket isn't known. Walter Smith when he managed Rangers, banned keeper Andy Goram from playing because of potential injuries.

Sutton, who missed out on a place in England's World Cup squad for Japan, has starred for Drayton for the past two Saturdays and has scored 104 and 119 not out, helping the tiny side to two successes. The former Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers striker turns out for the team with his father Mike and brother John. Sutton, one of the richest footballers in the game, is regarded as an excellent player. His Drayton team beat Hardingham, whose President Les King praised Sutton's contribution. King said "It was an excellent game of cricket between two sporting sides and Chris Sutton's stylish century included some superb shots." Amazingly his last unbeaten stand of 119 included six sixes. But, it is doubtful he has been allowed to play with the blessing of O'Neill."

Clearly written by a Scottish journalist with a great comprehension of cricket!
