Barney v Drayton 29th April 2007

Barney 188-8 (A. Barnes 41, R. Warren 50*, S. Simpson 10-1-31-4) Drayton 162-4 (T. Woods 80, T. Gregory 45) Drayton's Sunday side had their first game of the season away at Barney and found themselves on the wrong end of the result. We would like to thank the Barney players for the part they played in a moving minutes silence observed in memory of Drayton's captain David Ayres. Once the game got underway it was clear the pitch (which like so many others in Norfolk has had no rain for weeks) was going to have some uneven bounce about it. As has come to be expected Jason Trett exploited the conditions in a hostile seven over burst of 2-11 - congratulations should be extended to Phil Jolly who snaffled his first catch in four years for Jason's second wicket. At the other end Matt Bourne had not brought his radar with him which meant an early introduction for the spin of Buncey - who performed admirably on his Drayton debut. Saul Simpson gave good support in his spell of 4-31. For the second season running Barney's middle order batsman R. Warren took the game away from Drayton with an unbeaten 50, which included four sixes. The final total of 188-8 was always going to be competitive. In reply, Drayton lost Philip Wright early, which brought together Tim Woods, in his first game of weekend cricket for 9 seasons, and Tony Gregory. Unfortunately, both batsman were suffering from hamstring injuries which hampered their running between the wickets. However, that should take no credit away from their fine partnership of 143 - which eventually ended when Woods was bowled for a magnificent 80. Gregory departed in the last over for 45 as Drayton eventually fell 27 runs short of their target.
