Drayton v Bungay 26th May 2007

Drayton 124 Bungay 127-5 Losing four top order wickets in six overs was the main catalyst for Drayton's defeat against Bungay on Saturday. Philip Wright and Andy Hawes negotiated the opening twelve overs from Bungay's opening bowlers Tom York and Norwich goalkeeper Joe Lewis who generated genuine pace from the damp surface. Wright fell to a tumbling catch at mid off, Gary Smith played on, Hawes drove a full toss straight to cover and Howard Davies was trapped leg before. Paul Eggett and Michael Mario-Ghae staged a mini recovery, but when the latter fell Drayton were left at 77-7. Pil Soanes (34) and Gary Foreman (9) added 30 for the ninth wicket, whilst debutant Keno Mario-Ghae stayed long enough to help Soanes add a third batting point in the final over before the innings ended at 124. As well as the two Bungay opening bowlers, David Fuller (8.4-3-14-4) also showed there was plenty in the pitch for bowlers who put the balls in the right areas.

Drayton needed to take early wickets to give themselves a change and were given the perfect start when short leg James Kay took a smart catch to dismiss M. Watts off Gary Foreman. However, Bungay's New Zealander A. McCash and Fuller then added 67 for the 2nd wicket to seemingly put the game beyond Drayton's reach. Both were dismissed in quick succession along with York and Hart which left the game back in the balance at 97-5. However Will Lewis (32 not out) guided the visitors to victory leaving Drayton frustrated that they had not put an extra 20/25 runs on the board to give themselevs a real chance. For Drayton, Foreman and Smith both took two wickets, the other falling to Phil Soanes.
