Great Witchingham 'A' v Drayton 16th June 2007

Great Witchingham 'A' 128-9 Drayton 23-2 Unfortunately the typical British weather spoilt what was potentially an exciting finish with Drayton poised, possibly, to pull off a shock victory against promotion contenders, Great Witchingham 'A'.

A heavy downpour at 1.45, delayed the start - and indeed without the impressive covers that Witchingham possess the game would never have started. The game eventually began at 3.25 with both captains agreeing on a 35 over a side game. The hosts were quickly out of the traps, reaching 23 inside six overs before former Drayton batsman Sam Dacre was smartly caught by Philip Wright off the bowling of captain Phil Soanes, who had opted to open the bowling with himself. Soanes, in conjunction with Lee Cornfield, produced an impressive probing spell, and by the time the pair had bowled their alloted overs, Witchingham were 53-4 off 18 overs, Soanes returning figures of 3-26 from his nine overs. Enter Andy Denny, making his first appearance of the season in the first team, and he was quickly into his straide taking the wicket of Page (the hosts top scorer with 29) in only his third over. Wickets continued to fall as Witchingham looked to put a total on the board - Soanes and Chris Copeland both distinguishing themselves with fine catches - Denny eventually finishing with 4-25 whilst John Sutton also picked up a wicket on his first appearance of the season. The hosts closed at 128-9 their innings having been punctuated by an early tea caused by another rain shower.

Drayton's reply started well with Sutton and Howard Davies looking untroubled - Davies playing a couple of particularly impressive late cuts. In Reynolds fourth over, Davies went to the well once too often and was bowled attempting to late cut, whilst Gary Smith followed LBW next ball to leave Drayton at 13-2. James Kay joined Sutton to steady the ship, but after just one ball of the tenth over the heavens opened again and both captains agreed to call it a day.
