Drayton v Sheringham 'A' 10th June 2007

Sheringham 'A' 94 Drayton 100-0 Drayton were looking to continue their good recent run of form against a youthful Sheringham 'A' side - however Drayton were weakened by the absence of captain Warren Kedge, wicketkeeper Phil Jolly and the ill Saul Simpson. As a result, Ibby Badat and Sam Giacomelli made their Drayton debuts, whilst Steve King, Ryan Pointer and Will Herring all made their first Sunday appearances of the season. Batting first, Sheringham were faced by some fine new ball bowling by Jason Trett and Matt Bourne. T. Rodwell played some attractive shots before being caught by wicketkeeper Stuart Bowes. After 12 overs, Sheringham were 25-3, with some of their senior players at the crease. Jody Cork's second over produced two wickets - the first to an outstanding diving catch by stand in captain Trett. Sheringham staged a mini fightback to reach 86-6, however captain J. Russen lofted a shot into the outfield off Herring which produced another fine catch from Trett. the left handed M. Holdem provided Sheringham's main resistance - however on 33, his stumps were rearranged by Trett. When the innings concluded, thanks to a juggling catch by Badat, the total had reached 94, the pick of the bowlers being Trett 8-5-6-3 and Herring 5.2-0-21-3.

In reply, Drayton opened up with the debutants Giacomelli and Badat, and both clearly looked at ease at the crease. Giacomelli was quick to latch onto anything short, showing a particular liking for the cut shot. Badat played some elegant shots of his pads, however when the situation demanded he was quick to hit the ball hard. At 88-0 after 16 overs and with Giacomelli on 38, it was indicated from the pavilion that two sixes would bring up a debut 50. The first ball from Schofield was dispatched high over midwicket for the first six and the next ball was launched well over long leg to bring up a well earned 50. Badat played equally well in making 40, and it would be remiss not to mention some outstanding ground fielding from the young Sheringham players who never let their heads drop and were a credit to their club.
