Drayton v Swanton Morley 3rd June 2007

Drayton 191-4 Swanton Morley 158 On a glorious afternoon Warren Kedge won the toss and sensibly decided to make use of the pitch for his batsman. Philip Wright and James Kay, making a welcome Sunday appearance, accumulated steadily against some tight bowling and on a pitch offering some assistance to the bowlers. Kay was first to go but not before having demonstrated his wide array of off drives and cover drives - the partnership was worth 74, of which Kay made 40. Swanton Morley were then able to pin Drayton down with some accurate seam bowling from Appleby and Scriven - having been 74-1 in the 18th over, Drayton had only managed to progress to 84-1 by the end of the 26th. Wright, in conjunction with Tony Gregory, started to accelerate and 30 runs came up in the next five overs. Gregory misdjudged a full toss and was caught for 15 - debutant Jody Cork departed having struck a four off his first ball, to leave Drayton 129-3 in the 34th over. The next 34 balls then saw Drayton add 58 runs, as Stuart Bowes (31) along with Wright plundered the tiring Swanton Morley bowlers. The hosts finishing with 191-4, of which Wright's share was 76 not out.

In reply, D. Ryan went after the Drayton bowlers from the start, however he popped up a simple catch to James Kay at short cover off Jason Trett. Captain D. Appleby was bowled by a perfect Matt Bourne yorker for 0, and Trett bowled G. Scriven for 2, leaving the visitors at 34-3. R. Packman joined the ever impressive Ricky Forder at the crease and played the obdurate straight man as Swanton Morley started to threaten Drayton's total. Packman had made 10 out of a partnership of 83 when a smart bit of work in the field between Wright and Saul Simpson saw him run out by several feet. Forder, realising he was running out of partners continued his assault on the Drayton bowlers, however James Kay, who had come in for much punishment, produced an unplayable delivery to account for his man. Forder's excellent contribution was 84 including 10 fours and 4 sixes. Drayton were made to work hard for the remaining wickets, eventually concluding matters in the 33rd over with Swanton Morley on 158.
