Drayton 'A' v Tacolneston 21st June 2008

Tacolneston 160-8 Drayton 'A' 163-2 At 1.45, with persistent heavy drizzle and overcast skies, the chances of this match being completed seemed in the balance. But James Kay’s wicket was hard and both captains sportingly decided to play the match if at all possible, even though the outfield was wet. Sensibly, it was decided to limit the game to 35 overs per side, and the first ball was bowled shortly after 2.30. Tacolneston made steady progress against accurate opening spells from Jason Trett and Jamie Scarff. The wicket was surprisingly quick, Trett beating both batsmen with his quicker ball; Scarff, however, struck first, bowling the opener with an extravagant slower ball. He dismissed the first three batsmen, finishing with 3-29 from his nine overs. At over 16, the visitors were 48-3. The arrival of Banham, who hit the ball very hard in his partnership with Eastman, helped to accelerate the scoring. He, too, fell to a slower ball, this time from Nigel Massingham. Despite being hit for six in his first over, skipper Daz Flatt steadied to take three wickets and Tacolneston, after their mid-innings surge, found scoring more difficult later, managing only 17 runs in their last five overs.

When Drayton began their reply, the outfield had dried a little, but Auckland and Banham bowled accurately. Mike Sutton and Chris Coupland built their opening partnership intelligently, putting on 70 in 15 overs. The arrival of off-spinner Hawkes tempted Coupland (37) into a sweep, which he top-edged to the keeper. After Taylor had departed quickly to a run-out, the two Mikes - Bown (35 not out) and Sutton - saw the team home, with a succession of boundaries. Mike Sutton eventually finished with a splendid 69 not out. RT.
