Watton v Drayton 'A' 23rd June 2007

Watton 43 Drayton 'A' 47-2 The Watton wicket was green when Drayton arrived. After a heavy shower, which delayed the start of play until 2.55, the game was reduced to 40 overs a side. Fortunately, Drayton had won the toss and the team as a unit immediately asserted itself through good accurate bowling, aggressive field placings and wholehearted fielding: James Reeve was prominent, with some good chasing and stops; Graham Crowe took a catch and dismissed the Watton opener with a direct hit.

After the first 10 overs, bowled by Jason Trett (5-3-6-1) and Matt Bourne (9-2-14-1), Watton were 13-2. The introduction of Darren Flatt (4-2-5-4, including a diving caught and bowled) kept Watton struggling. He promptly took himself off - surely the most flagrant example of jug-avoidance in the club's history.

Drayton's innings (10 overs of it before tea) was accompanied by Watton's encouraging cries of "You're never in on this wicket". Richard Taylor and Tony Gregory went cheaply, but Nigel Massingham, with a watchful innings, and the returning James Kay, with several aggressive shots, saw Drayton home after 3 balls of the twentieth over, on day when the first team also won.
