Drayton v Great Witchingham 'A' 6th May 2006

Great Witchingham 'A' 136 (G. Foreman 11-4-27-5) Drayton 132 The first team lost a nailbiting match to Great Witchingham 'A' on Saturday at Drayton Rec. The home side got off to the perfect start when Gary Smith picked up the wicket of Chipperfield with the first ball of the match, caught by a tumbling Philip Wright at mid on. Two more wickets fell in quick succession including Lee Cornfield picking up the big hitting Australian, Kyle McAllister. A frustrating period followed as Drayton regularly found the edge of Baker's bat - but nothing went to hand. The introduction of captain, Gary Foreman into the attack did the trick as he picked up three quick wickets , with Great Witchingham reduced to 81-7. The experienced Mears brothers hit lustily, as Witchingham were finally bowled out for 136.

In reply, Drayton safely navigated to 71-1 in the 22nd over, before Andy Hawes and Paul Eggett fell in the same over. Wickets then continued to fall regularly, before Gary Smith and Lee Cornfield reduced some order with a sensible 8th wicket stand bringing Drayton back into the match. Gary Foreman was brilliantly caught by McAllister on the cover boundary trying to hit the winning runs, leaving Luke Skeffington on strike for the last over, bowled by the Australian, with 5 runs to win. From the second ball, Skeffington drove to cover and attempted to scamper through for a single, only for S. Arthurton to throw down the stumps with no-one backing up. An exciting game of cricket but a disappointing result none the less.
