This is the Fortress Marienberg.
It was originally built in 1201, around an 8th century church.  It is a long hike up the hills surrounding it to get there.  The sloping fields you see are vineyards.  The area is known for it's Frankonian wines.

Here is a view of the town of Wurzburg.  The fortress protected it for centuries.

This is the floor of the 8th century church.  On it are carvings of several saints. 

This is the well where they would get water while the Fortress was under siege.  It goes 300 feet down towards the water table near the river.  I couldn't imagine being the person who had to dig it hundreds of years ago.

There is a museum inside the walls as well.  This is one of the last pics I could take before I ran out of film.  You can see that the horses needed armor protection too.  I'll try to get in some other pics from here later.
