Prokaryotic Nucleoid

vs.

Eukaryotic Nucleus

A nucleus contains most of the genes that control the cell. The nuclear material (genetic material) of the Eukaryotic nucleus is enclosed by a nuclear envelope. Inside the nucleus there is chromatin which functions the same to the nucleus as cytoplasm functions to the entire cell. The prokaryotic cell does not have a nucleus but instead it has nuclear material (genetic material) which is concentrated in a region called the nucleoid, but no membrane separates this region from the rest of the cell. The Prokaryotic nucleoid does not contain chromatin because it has cytoplasm all around the nucleoid.
