URGENT NOTICE
The IET South Wales Electronics & Communication Technical Network
would like to invite you to the following event:

Reeves, Radar and the birth of Smart Bombing
By Mr David Robertson – Radar Historian
On Thursday 15 January 2009, 18:30
Faraday Lecture Theatre,
Swansea University,
Singleton Park,
Swansea, SA2 8PP

This lecture has been arranged because 2009 is the
70th anniversary of the outbreak of world war 2.
In the years leading up to WW2, British scientists and
engineers masterminded developments that would save their
country from defeat and shape our modern world.

In Britain, Robert Watson Watt and others turned the idea of
radar into the world's first operational system - the immense
Chain Home network (Cadw recently listed a Chain Home Low Radar Station
at Margam, Port Talbot – opposite Corus - It is claimed that it is an
unique survivor in the British Isles) that helped save Britain from defeat
in the Battle of Britain. At the same time, in France, Alec Reeves
devised Pulse Code Modulation - the basis for all modern digital equipment
and systems. Soon afterwards, the Welshman 'Taffy' Bowen
(born in Cockett, Swansea) led the creation of airborne radar,
while Reeves built 'Oboe' - a blind bombing system as accurate as
today's satellite navigation and mapping devices.

Radar historian David Robertson, who is writing a biography of Reeves,
will tell these and other stories about the technologies that would
come together to create our modern 'information age'!

Refreshments available after lecture. Additionally an optional informal
Buffet meal (cost £17 per Person) will also be held after the lecture.
Pre registration for the meal is essential; however you may register
for the FREE lecture on the night.
