Not much is know about the Bulgarian Airforces in the West. Like other eastern european nations at the advent of WWII they walked a tight rope with the possibility of invasion from Nazi Germany. Bulgarians tried to remain a neutral nation as long as possible. Unfortunately for them their geographical position across the lines of invasion led Germany to pressure the goverment into signing the Tri-partite Pact in March of 1941. Even then the Bulgrian government avoided any large scale serious national commitment to the fight. As part of the Axis and having declared war on December 13th 1941 on America, Bulgaria was eventually subjected to air attacks on the capital of Sofia. Having no indigineous aircraft industry she purchased aircraft from other nations notably the Czech made Avaia B534 and Polish PZL 11 and 24's. Eventually Germany transferred captured French Dewotine 520's and released the ME-109 in various models before the armistice in 1944. After a internal coup in September 1944, Bulgaria withdrew from the Pact and with the assistance of Soviets drove the German forces from their soil.
