Magyar Kiralyi Honved Legiero - The Royal Hungarian Airforce

Photo from collection of Lazlo Hegedus was a pilot officer in the Hungarian Airforce
The Hungarian Airforce like its other Eastern European counterparts grew out of the first world wars treaties that broke up the Hapsburg Empire into rival states. Hungary had no indigineous aircraft industry of her own, but did have a strong flying tradition. Her airmen flew from the steppes of Russia to the skies over Budapest. In the end the overwhelming weight of Soviet ground and the Allied Airforces overran Hungary. Often flying against the bomber fleets and escorting fighters numbering in the hundreds they continued to serve until the last of her airmen had to fly from bases in neighboring Austria. The few survivors fought to the end, finally destroying their aircraft rather than surrendering them. Many veterans were badly treated at wars end. Imprisoned, denied education or employment, those that could emigrated and are spread around the world.
