Although I like doing research a lot, my husband Sjoerd
van Eeden and I also like the mountains. Basel is surrounded by several beautiful mountain area's: Vosges, Schwarzwald, Jura and a bit further away the Alps. Since we don't have any mountains in Holland, I have started rock climbing and skiing to enjoy the most of it. We also discovered snowshoe hiking, which is really great, you can go everywhere and find the most beautiful spots. During holidays we like to go off with walking shoes, backpack and tent, although I must admit that owning a car made us a bit lazier! Besides it's easy to reach location in the middle of europe, Basel is also a nice city to live in. It is not so big that you can't get around by bike. To get some more 'power', I also joined the Novartis fitnessclub.
In may 2000 I climbed my first 200m route with Sjoerd, the Eulengrat close to Solothurn, here we just arrived at the top.
Some more climbing info and pictures
Skiing, here still on a beginners slope, now I prefer the red slopes!
We also like crosscountry skiing and snowshoe hiking, have a look at some

The Rhine in Basel, although not so clean when it reaches Holland, here you can still enjoy swimming in it.
It has become a tradition that once a year with a group we help my (former) colleague Etienne Herzog harvesting grapes. This was our group in 1998.
Have a look at some pictures from my family album. You are also welcome to pay a virtual visit to our old appartement (sorry, still have to make pictures of the new place).
I don't want to give the false impression I'm super sportive! At home I like to read or play games, either with or without a computer. Our favorite board game is RoboRally. Click my favorite robot Twonky to know more about that game:
.
I also want to advertise the oriental board game Go, although I'm too lazy to learn it well. The beauty of this game is that it has very simple rules, but is still more complex than chess.
