Eugene and other "modern" communities suffer from terrible problems because most of us are addicted to values and techniques that are terribly inappropriate and unsustainable. Most residents' real values are: (1) Get lots of money. (2) Get lots of power. (3) Get lots of possessions. Their techniques are: Let everybody know how rich and powerful they are by showing off their big corporations, their big houses, their big land holdings, their big airplanes, their big boats and their big cars. Pay as little as possible to their employees. Bribe politicians and brainwash voters so they can continue to pollute and exploit.
Our values should be: (1) Get lots of reliable information from many sources. (2) Share information and power. (3) Buy only what we really need and enjoy and be sure it comes from sustainable sources. Our techniques should be: Prohibit corporate buying of politicians. Tax corporations in direct proportion to their use of unsustainable or polluting raw materials, their use of underpaid employees and their creation of pollution-causing products. Put those politicians who accept any private money in jail where they belong. Create a real democracy here and throughout the world. Plan for a sustainable future for ourselves, our descendants and for Mother Earth.
If most people do not change their values and techniques, the 21st century will see the failure of the human experiment and the end of human civilization.
