UWP Calls on Prime Minister Anthony to live up to promises of Transparency and Accountability on the Casino issue

Press Statement
September 22, 2000

The Government of Saint Lucia plans to introduce a Gaming Control Act at the next sitting of Parliament. The Act, which has already been given its first reading in the House of Assembly, will permit gaming or casino gambling, as it is more commonly known, in Saint Lucia.

The United Workers Party notes that the Government is proceeding with this legislation on gambling with the utmost secrecy in an effort to force the measure on the Saint Lucian public.

Saint Lucians will remember that the St Lucia Labour Party, while in opposition, expressed the strongest opposition to the introduction of Casino Gambling here, and they led most Saint Lucians to believe that they would never support Casinos.  This, the UWP considers to be a blatant act of deceit, and as such strongly believes that no political party must ever mislead a people or a nation in this manner.

Consequently, the UWP calls on the Prime Minister to live up to his frequent promises of transparency and accountability, and immediately begin widespread public consultation, involving all interest groups, to determine the wishes of Saint Lucians on this sensitive issue.

The UWP further calls on the Prime Minister to withdraw the proposed legislation on Casino gambling until the public consultations are completed and the wishes of the St. Lucian public have been ascertained.
