The Family And Medical Leave Act

To 1993 Family And Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in May 12th month period.  The leave can be taken for the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child,  the care of the family member with a serious health condition or the employees own serious health condition. 

The actor was signed into law by President Clinton after nearly 10 years of lobbying by labor unions,   women's' rights groups and the grass roots organizations.  The purpose of FMLA is to enable employees to more easily balance the obligations of work and family. 

FMLA Booklets are available to members. 

 Eligible reasons for FMLA leave:
the birth of a child, adoption or foster care (this type of leave it must be taken within 12 months of adoption or placement). 
To care for and spouse, child or parent with the serious health condition. 
If the employee is unable to perform the functions of his/her job due to a serious health condition.
