A wall of remembrance

The shocking fact is that over 5,000 people are missing and/or presumed dead as a result of the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on 9-11-2001. I recently learned that one of those who died at the Pentagon bears my name.

No doubt many other people share names with those who died in this horrifying terrorist attack. Plus thousands have suffered the agonizing sudden loss of a loved one. We have all as a nation been reminded that, "It could have been me," upon one of those planes with the suicidal terrorist or trapped in a burning, crumbling building.

No doubt when a full list of dead and missing is compiled many Americans will be able to find someone who shared their name. Or you may already know one of the dead or missing. A wall of remembrance at the site of this tragedy bearing each person's name would be an appropriate memorial. Yet before we make another wall to memorialize the dead, we must resolve to keep America free for the living by winning the war on terrorism.

Finding one's name among the dead drives home the fact how close we are as Americans. We are a great melting pot of many races, religions and ethnic origins. Any one of us could have died in this terrorist attack. Any one of us could be victim of the next terrorist attack.

I do not say this to strike fear but to establish resolve, that our nation has been attacked, our home land invaded by an enemy, an army of evil intent. We must act with firmness and resolve to insure this type of tragedy never happens again!

We must weed out this evil from every state and territory, vanquish and destroy it before another outrageous act of terrorism can harm a single American. Indeed, we must act to bring an infinite justice to all peace loving and free nations.

This will not be an easy task and it may take a long time. Our sons and daughters may die in the process. Other Americans may soon find their names upon a wall of fallen heroes who died for their country in the war against terrorism.

Certainly the events of Sept. 11 are a sobering reminder that we each have been made victims, our lives forever changed. A sleeping giant has been awakened and together, one nation, indivisible, we will win the war on terrorism or one day all find our names upon the wall.
