Everglades Forever

State Project

The 2001-2002 Florida Society Children of the American Revolution State Project “Everglades Forever” provides members, seniors and C.A.R. friends an opportunity to Discover a National Treasure, The Everglades. Throughout this year, we will all learn about the unique beauty of the Everglades and its importance to the preservation of wildlife, freshwater supplies, and freshwater & saltwater habitats. Together we will study and learn about the current National and State efforts to restore, protect and preserve The Everglades for our generation and future generations.

Once the Florida Everglades, an American natural treasure, was a vibrant, free-flowing river of grass that provided clean water from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay. It was a vital haven for storks, alligators, panthers and other wildlife. Today, this extraordinary ecosystem - unlike any other in the world - is dying. During the past 50 years, the health and size of the Everglades have steadily declined. Lost to drainage & development, the Everglades is suffering from a severe shortage of clean, reliable water.

December 2000, the US Congress passed the “Restoring the Everglades, an American Legacy Act” that provides a Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan to ensure and preserve the Everglades & Biscayne National Park, improve the “health” of Lake Okeechobee, improve water deliveries to Florida and Biscayne Bays, improve water quality, enhance water supplies & virtually eliminate damaging freshwater releases to estuaries, and maintain flood protection. The cost of the $7.8 billion plan will be shared equally by the federal government and state of Florida.

The 2001-2002 State Project pin sale proceeds will support Everglades National Park signage in visitor centers detailing the Everglades Restoration project and associated educational materials for children.

"Perhaps, even in this last hour, in a new relation of usefulness and beauty, the vast, magnificent, subtle and unique region of the Everglades may not be utterly lost."
~ Marjory Stoneman Douglas, The Everglades: River of Grass
