Years ago in Pagan Culture during the harvest moon they had a festival, called Vinotok. This festival symbolized the coming of the new and the passing of the old. The Character of the grump symbolized the cleansing of this festival. So by burning the grump you are cleansing yourself. You also may burn things that have brought you trouble throughout the year.
