program

Sydney's lesbian and
gay community has a strong tradition of arts and cultural activity. Our
city stages the largest and most vibrant gay and lesbian cultural events
and festival in the world, producing events which have international resonance.
The aims of the Cultural Program are inclusion, diversity and experience,
embracing a wider audience and delivering unique experiences. We will
reach out and encourage lesbians and gay men from both hemispheres to
share their pride and creativity with us. All participants in the Cultural
Program will receive medals to commemorate their part in Gay Games VI.
Events
will cover all art forms - theatre, dance, visual arts and multimedia
as well as community and special events. Cultural development has a key
role in the festival. We will actively encourage discussion, analysis
and skill sharing through a series of workshops and classes. The Cultural
Program will be held over two weeks, commencing four days before the Opening
Ceremony. This gives both participants and spectators the opportunity
to enjoy more events.
The festival
will have two major components:
Events produced by Sydney 2002 - professional performances,
exhibitions and special events produced specifically for the Gay Games
by gay men and lesbians.
Umbrella
events - produced by other gay and lesbian community or arts
organizations. Community events and fundraisers produced by and for lesbian
and gay organizations, arts events staged by existing Sydney arts organizations
eg. galleries, theatre companies, venues. Events must have lesbian and
gay relevance to be included the official umbrella event program.
The Cultural and Sporting
Programs are designed to complement each other - equal parts working in
harmony. The Cultural events will be more visible than ever to sporting
participants as the festival will come to them, rather than only focusing
on arts venues. Spectators will be entertained in queues at sporting venues,
train stations and stadiums. Special events will encourage interaction
between sporting and cultural participants promoting unity between lesbians
and gay men of all interests.
An Access Advisory
Committee will be established to facilitate outreach and representation.
This committee will be made up of lesbian and gay representatives from
a diverse range of ages and abilities, ethnic backgrounds, and involvement
with indigenous, HIV/AIDS and disabled issues. They will advise on the
development of events and assist with establishing networks for encouraging
a diverse range of participation.

Outdoor Entertainment
Lesbian and gay performers will provide free entertainment for spectators
in queues for sporting events, at train and bus stations and at the Cultural
Centres. This is designed to keep spectators entertained as well as to
combine elements of cultural with sport. There will be a festival atmosphere
everywhere you go during the Games. Produced by Sydney 2002.
Beach
Party
A gay and lesbian beach party will be held at Bondi Beach. This will be
an outdoor spectacular on the evening before the Opening Ceremony, giving
the opportunity to relax before the Games officially commence. The Beach
Party will feature demonstration sports - surfing, beach touch and beach
volleyball. An Aussie BBQueer will provide party goers with the taste
of a typical Australian pastime - surf and sand. Produced by Sydney
2002.
International
Gay and Lesbian Cultural Conference
The Gay Games are an ideal time to hold an international conference for
gay and lesbian artists. There are very few opportunities for queer artists
from different cities to get together and talk about the direction of
lesbian and gay culture. It is vital that artists be given the opportunity
to discuss the development of their work globally. A three day conference
at the University of Sydney will be held in the days leading up to the
Opening Ceremony. The conference will feature discussions, workshops,
guest speakers, art and HIV workshops, performances and seminars. It will
be a global first and a significant step in the development of queer culture.
Produced by Sydney 2002.
