More Politics

11/15/01 - A school bond issue is on the ballot here. $54 million wish for bonds to support school construction. This is badly needed and we support this issue. In Slidell, Wyatt Marshal is running for City Marshall. This is a pick 'em. So, pick whoever you want. The JP position is up for decision with Darlene Wegener running. Another pick 'em. Your choice here. In Mandeville, a renewal for police is up for review. We support this one, too. In the 2nd Mosquito abatement District, a 4.20 millage is up for consideration here. For northern mosquito control. Not enough is known about this issue. Who's paying for the service now? What is paying for the service now? Will it discontinue if not funded through this inititive? Questions to be answered before taking sides.

11/18/01 - St. Tammany voters passed the school board bond issue with 805 of the vote. A junior high school will be built in Mandeville. Voters in the Mandeville areaa approved Proposition 1 which was a 25-mill tax renewal for Fire Department services. Proposition 2, a 2-mill property tax increase to add an ambulance and provide for other emergency services, passed. Another Mandeville voting question passed authorizing a 6-mill property tax for 10 years to subsidize salaries, maintenance and police equipment, 89 - 11%.In the 2nd Mosquito Abatement District, residents passed a 4.2-mill tax to extend services. Pearl River residents approved a 15-mill property tax for firefighting operations.

5/4/03 - The other three issues, a sales tax in Slidell, bond issue in Mandeville and a Recreation Tax in Abita/Waldheim passed.

2/18/04 - In a retreat recently, St. Tammany Parish Council member, Joe "Coach" Thomas acknowledged that he was on medication and drinking when he unzipped his pants and mooned another participant. Thomas apologized. Readers should also remember that Thomas was sued by a teacher at St. Tammany Junior High School in 1997 for sexual harassment while he was assistant principal. Perhaps, it's time for him to quit the political life.

11/4/04 - Voters, in St. Tammany, approved a new 4-mill tax for the coroner's office. They also approved a renewal tax for the juvenile detention center. Other issues include: a renewal of a ten year tax for drainage and a five year renewal tax for a District 4 levee system.

11/4/04 - Jim Lamz barely beat John Wells for the remaining four years of Judge Gary Dragon's judgeship. Dragon recently passed away.

11/4/04 - In Covington, city voters renewed a 10-year millage of 10-mills to fund the Fire Department.
