What can we know about The Endtimes? Although there are diffences of opinion regarding the details of interpretation of the book, the central theme is clear : through Christ the Lord, God will finally and totally defeat all of his enemies, including Satan, and will reward his faithful people with the blessing of a new heaven and a new earth when this victory is complete.
The Revelation to John was written at a time when the writer is being persecuted because of his faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. The writer's main concern is to give readers hope and encouragement, and to urge them to remain faithful during times of suffering and persecution.
Do your expectations turn out to be naively optimistic, unduly pessimistic, or surprisingly realistic? In most cases, what makes the diffences is whether you acted on the basis of specific knowledge or on unfounded feelings.
Who's right? Which expectations are in line with what we can know for sure? In this study, we will be looking to the Bible for answers to our questions about the Endtimes.
Opinions about the future follow the same pattern. To avoid being victimized by false hopes or unrealistic fears, we need to search out reliable information and live by it.
Many find it hard to know whom to believe. Some predict a nuclear holocaust. Others speak ominously of mass starvation. Many economists are forecasting a worldwide financial colapse. Still others see a peaceful utopia just ahead.

INDONESIA
Impact: The western tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the closest inhabited area to the epicentre of the earthquake, was devastated by the tsunami. More than 70% of the inhabitants of some coastal villages are reported to have died.
Toll: 111,171 people died, while more than 127,000 others remain missing. The exact number of victims will probably never be known. The number of homeless is estimated at 800,000.
Aid: There are at least 100 aid organisations - plus UN agencies - operating in Indonesia. Aid agencies have provided emergency food, water and shelter to about 330,000 people, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The agency says the next step is to construct temporary settlements for 150,000 families.
The government estimates that reconstruction will cost $4.5bn (£2.4bn) over the next three years. Reuters reports that donors have pledged $1.7bn for this year. Indonesia - considered one of the world's most corrupt countries - has put controls in place to try to prevent dishonest officials siphoning off donations.
SRI LANKA
Impact: Sri Lanka suffered more from the tsunami than anywhere else apart from Indonesia. Southern and eastern coastlines have been ravaged. Homes, crops and fishing boats have all been destroyed. The International Labour Organisation estimates that at least 400,000 people have lost their jobs. But initial surveys suggest that the country's coral reef systems may not have been badly damaged.
Toll: At least 31,000 people are known to have died, and thousands more are missing. The number of homeless people is put at between 800,000 and one million.
Aid: President Chandrika Kumaratunga has launched a $3.5bn reconstruction drive, and foreign troops are helping to clear wreckage as life begins to return to normal.
But there has been a row over whether the government has given enough assistance to the north-eastern part of the country controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels. BBC correspondents say the disaster now looks likely to exacerbate rather than resolve ethnic grievances.
INDIA'S SOUTH-EAST COAST
Impact: India's south-east coast, especially the state of Tamil Nadu, was the worst affected area on the mainland. (See below for more details on the Andaman and Nicobar islands.)
Toll: More than 8,800 people are confirmed dead in mainland India, 7,968 of them in Tamil Nadu and almost 600 in Pondicherry (see below for data on the Andaman and Nicobar islands). Thousands more are still missing. At least 140,000 Indians, mostly from fishing families, are in relief centres.
Aid: Repairing the damage is expected to cost about $1.2bn - but India is in fact providing aid to other countries hit by the tsunami, including medical workers, supplies and cash.
INDIA'S ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS
Impact: Salt water, which washed over the islands, contaminated many sources of fresh water and destroyed large areas of arable land. Most of the islands' jetties have also been destroyed.
Toll: At least 1,894 of the islands' 400,000 people are confirmed dead and more than 5,500 are missing - 4,500 from Katchall island alone.
Aid: India has refused assistance from international aid agencies because of the presence of a military base on one island and indigenous tribes on some others. The military has been building extra landing fields on the islands to help with relief. About 12,000 people have been moved to relief camps on larger islands.
THAILAND
Impact: The west coast of Thailand was severely hit, including outlying islands and tourist resorts near Phuket. Some bodies may still lie in the rubble of ruined hotels.
Toll: More than 5,300 are confirmed dead. More than 1,700 foreigners from a total of 36 countries are among the dead.
Aid: Thailand has not asked for disaster relief aid, but it has requested technical help to identify the dead. A huge operation to take DNA samples from the bodies is under way.
MALDIVES
Impact: Twenty of the Maldives' 199 inhabited islands have been described as "totally destroyed". The shallowness of the water limited the tsunami's destructive power, but flooding was extensive. A sea wall protecting the Maldives capital, Male, prevented half the city being destroyed, the UN said. Many luxury resorts will be closed for months - but parliamentary elections went ahead as planned on 22 January.
Toll: At least 82 people have died and 26 are missing. About 12,500 have been displaced.
Aid: UN agencies have provided $400,000 in emergency funds and have distributed water and hygiene kits to 2,500 households. Aid organisations plan to provide 1,800 tons of rice and 450 tons of canned fish and conduct a national immunisation campaign. The UN Development Programme is helping to coordinate use of the $19m pledged for reconstruction efforts.
MALAYSIA
Impact: Although Malaysia lies close to the epicentre, much of its coastline was spared widespread devastation because it was shielded by Sumatra. However, scores of people were swept from beaches near the northern island of Penang.
Toll: At least 68 people are confirmed dead.
BURMA
Impact: The worst affected area was the Irrawaddy Delta, inhabited by poor subsistence farmers and fishing families.
Toll: Burma's military junta has put the death toll at 59, but the World Food Programme (WFP) says this may be an underestimate. One WFP employee found 200 households where at least one person was missing. Hundreds of Burmese migrants workers living in Thailand are also thought to have died.
BANGLADESH
Toll: Two people have been reported dead in Bangladesh.
SOMALIA
Impact: Somalia is the worst-hit African state, with damage concentrated in the region of Puntland, on the tip of the Horn of Africa. The water destroyed 1,180 homes, smashed 2,400 boats and rendered freshwater wells and reservoirs unusable, the UN said in a report early in January.
Toll: Between 150 and 200 Somalis are thought to have died, with thousands more homeless and many fishermen still unaccounted for. As many as 30,000 people may have been displaced.
Aid: The UN has called for $13m to help tsunami victims. Aid agencies with small ground operations in Puntland have delivered food and relief supplies, as has a German Navy helicopter. Somalia is anarchic and has few roads, presenting aid agencies with a major challenge.
