HISTORY AND GOALS

Legal Assistants of West Virginia, Inc. (LAWV) was organized in 1982 by a group of legal assistants in the Charleston-Huntington areas. This organization was the result of a need for an organized educational and professional association for legal assistants. In 1985, LAWV became an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc.. LAWV now has regions throughout the State of West Virginia, governed by one central Board of Directors, which meets regularly to conduct business. The regions independently conduct monthly business and educational meetings. Each year in May, members and non-members gather for the annual meeting and seminar sponsored by one of the regions on a rotating basis.

The goals of LAWV are:

x      To foster active communication among legal assistants and to act as a forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas;

x      To promote and encourage the growth of the legal assistant’s role in the legal community;

x      To monitor and participate in the development of the legal assistant profession on a local, state and national level;

x      To promote the educational, professional and ethical standards of the legal assistant profession;

x      To promote a cooperative effort with members of the bar association, legal educators and the legal community in general; and

x      To promote the education of the legal community in the utilization of legal assistants.
