Very similar circumstances exist throughout the academic community. At my own university in the English Department alone nearly 30% of a department numbering 34 faculty members either had no credentials or had falsified their credentials in some way—claiming to have published work that existed only by title in "shadow" publications. When confronted with proof of this, the university administration chose to ignore the facts and while one member was actually terminated (the one with no degrees whatsoever) the others have been protected and their transgressions covered up. In part or wholly this can be attributed to the fact that the others had information that compromised still more faculty members. I personally attribute this to the fact that in American universities, at any rate, during the 60s (when most of these men were pursuing their studies) diploma mills proliferated and it was possible to purchase term papers, dissertations, etc. Teaching was a profession that drew these men in because it afforded them forgiveable loans under the U.S.Department of Education policies then in effect. Such individuals are indeed a blot on the academic profession, they lie, they cheat, they steal and they corrupt. What can be done? Ultimately, their own arrogance and stupidity leads students, at least, to recognize their fraudulent behavior. In the meantime, they draw huge salaries at the public expense. I don't think that anything else can be done to stop or to expose them. University administrations are filled with their partners in crime. Fight the good fight, be the best that you can be and if all will not be well, at least you will know that it wasn't owing to your silence. I wish you luck. Sincerely, B. L. M. From:"Cliffo" Add to Address Book To:Date:Sat, 5 Sep 1998 12:16:28 +0800 Dear sir, I have just read a posting with your url posted to the Phinished? message board for graduate students. I am shocked and appalled at the situation you describe. As a young grad student myself, I cannot imagine a future for me in a university where this behaviour is acceptable. Such corruption must be fought against wherever it is encountered. I am English by birth, living and studying in Hong Kong. Sorry, I don't have a fax machine but I do wish to register my support for your struggle. Considering your complaint on the WWW about the Uruguayan university: Don't bother us in the NG's too much, but take the best action available to any scientist: send the proof, plus rulings, to all organisations in the field in which the other guy is involved. You might just get him out of any funding, or get him a nice statement in some article-indexes, like "Prof. .... has been found guilty of publishing large parts of text of others without proper referal". We had a similar situation in the Netherlands, but here the professor was actually fired for not refering to several sources in some of his books (note: these were NOT even scientific publications!) Detalles? It seems to be an international attitude to get away with as much as possible by those in positions of power. I noticed that you are an Egyptologist, and was hoping you could do a small favor for us here in the U.S. Would you please check out the above site and give me your opinion of the artifacts and epigraphy. If this find is authentic, I believe it will change world history tremendously. Your time, effort and opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jack B From:"alberto " Add to Address Book To:Subject: corrupcion universidad Date:Fri, 7 Aug 1998 19:35:19 -0000 Gracias por tu maravillosa pagina de denuncia. Saludos. alberto Dear friend, NJ, Oct. 18, 1998 I have Spanish parents but I was brought up in the US, I wish to congratulate you on your firm attitude of exposing those people at your university down there, it's the only way to change things, as I've found out. I've tried to help you posting many notices in discussion groups so people read about your problem. Good luck and don't give up ! Manuel C.
