The first time I slipped this in, pressed play, and was immediately bombarded by shrill, dissonant volume swells and a simple (yet effective) I-V-I orchestral bass line, I admit I thought it was a horror-movie score. Soon, however, the beat-oriented aspect of the album kicked in, and I figured (disappointedly) that the style of the opening was just a fluke. But I was ecstatic to discover that all was not lost - as it turns out, the chillbumps and the bass-thumps are kept in excellent balance. There was not a song on here that did not have at least some redeeming quality, even the trancier ones, which are well compensated-for by the textural and rhythmic variation of songs like Phunky Dogg and P-Phaze. The sparse (yay!) vocal samples range from the inane (a really goofy-sounding guy yelling "Praise the Lord!") to bad-ass (a James Earl Jones-y "Religion seeks discipline through fear"). The only song that sounded vaguely familiar was Science ov Love, which sounded a bit like Pop Will Eat Itself's "Intense", only a little darker and more subdued. There are some smoothly flanged drum tracks - Pheel the Pulse sticks out in my mind, as it's primarily wide-open flanged cymbal sounds. Overall, this is supposed to be some sort of concept album, but it really just boils down to good, dark ambience.
music best fit for: a damn cool Halloween party.
rating: seven out of ten (translates as "cool as hell").
