Text books

The number of textbooks, which cater for the Advanced Level Biology course is very great indeed. Each book has its strong points and its weaknesses. Rather than deciding for you what to buy, we are giving you some information about two of these 'A' level text-books. Do not buy the first book you come across. Take your time. We suggest that you browse through these two books thoroughly before deciding which one best suits your requirements and your level of attainment. You need not buy any book for the first couple of weeks.

Biology, 8/e

Raven, Johnson, Losos, Mason, Singer

Life: The Science of Biology
by Sadava, Heller, Orians, Purvis, Hillis. Published by Freeman (8th edition)

This is a beautifully illustrated and detailed American textbook aimed at the more mature student. A CD-ROM accompanies this book. Concepts, experimental background, active learning through questions, are all emphasised. All three authors have spent considerable time teaching Biology. The textbook is highly readable and student friendly. The 'Section to the student' gives some very good advice about how to go about studying the subject. Excellent value for money.

We also expect all students to buy A-Z Biology Handbook by Bill Indge. This book should be your constant companion when studying Biology. It can be used as a quick reference for biological terms that you do not understand. It is not just a dictionary. Terms are explained clearly and detailed examples are given. Since it is written specifically for 'A' Level students, difficult words encountered in higher level courses are not included in this book at all.
