Dr.Geeta Saxena Memorial Scholarship(Update 10/06/1998)
Dear XLer,
Dr.Geeta Saxena (affectionately known to all of us as GSAX) and her husband Dr.Madhukar Shukla, joined XLRI's OB faculty in 1990. This couple brought about a significant change in the XL experience. GSAX was Professor of OB, friend, guide and home away from home for many of us. She was a multifaceted person who could write a children's story in between a thesis on OB, even while cooking dinner for a homesick XLer. She imparted her passion on the subject of issues facing women by starting a course "Women in Management". This course fired the imagination of students to write papers and do their dissertatons on these issues.
After a lot of debates and discussions, we felt that the best way to keep this amazing spirit alive would be, by identifying and recognising one such independent and multifaceted student in each batch.
Dr.Madhukar Shukla has already instituted a medal for academic excellence - The Dr.Geeta Saxena Gold Medal. This gold medal has been made possible by Madhukar's donation of Rs.1.5 Lakhs to the students of XLRI. Only women would be eligible for this medal based on CQPI, dissertation or projects on women related issues and excellence in the area of OB. This medal has already been awarded to one such outstanding student at the XLRI convocation 1998.
It would also be fitting for us as her past students to cherish her memory by instituting a scholarship - The Dr.Geeta Saxena Memorial Scholarship for the best all rounder. The Scholarship would be open to both men and women students of XLRI. It will be awarded at the end of the first year, based on select criteria. Accordingly, points would be given for CQPI, achievements in sports, elected membership to student bodies, excellence in extra-curricular activities and participation in institute activities such as MAXI Fair. Should there be a tie in the points so accumulated the student with greater financial need would be awarded the Scholarship.
To establish this Scholarship, we are setting up a corpus through contributions from students and friends. We would like YOU to be part of this endeavour. You could send as large a contribution as you think fit, in the form of a Crossed Demand Draft/Cheque favouring XLRI, Jamshedpur (Please mail your contributions to any of the addresses mentioned below and NOT directly to XLRI,Jamshedpur. Along with your contribution please pen down a few lines on how you remember GSAX. Her poems and writings, along with all such tributes from her students and friends will be compiled in a book. A copy of this book will be given to each recipient of the Scholarship and the Medal. This way future generations of XLers will know what GSax meant to us and what she stood for. You will be updated on the contributions received and the progress made in deploying the same.
It would be appreciated if your contributions could reach the following mentioned as early as possible. If you have any queries or clarifications do contact any of the following. Any suggestions from you would be welcome.
Alumni Get-together in Delhi(Update 10/06/1998) Kudos to 1999 Batch! What an evening it was! XL Alumni present at this great get-together in Delhi on 6 June 1998, Saturday will remember it forever. The venue was Oberoi Maidens- Pool side lawns. AND the day's major attraction was Dr.Madhukar Shukla. Over 200 guys 'n gals turned up. The evening brought back the sweet memories of XL parties, wet nights.... The 1998 batch had done a fantastic job in rejuvenating the XL-Alumni Network. They had organised one such get-together in Bangalore on 31st May 1998 (Unfortunately I missed it!) and are going to organise one more in Bombay this weekend.
From 1996 batch, Virendra Bhardwaj, Vasu, 'God' Sriram, 'Chief' Dinu, 'Potler' Ramakrishna, 'ET' Mahapatra, Sameer Khanna, Hem Chandra, Lakshmi (Only girl from 1995-96 batches), Tipu and Sand' Mathur with his fiancee-Arpana have come. One can see ET giving his fundaes on women and consumables to Arpana (For those of you who don't know ET is a married man now and - if Vasu is right- his activties are guided by his better half) and Chief giving fundaes on how Alcohol consumption reduces the risk of Cardio Vascular Deceases...

Abhilash Varghese died in a bike crash at Goa on the night of November 28th,
1997.
All of us remember the incident vividly. Abhilash was one of the first of
our alma mater to leave so young.
Since then we have debated on the best way to perpetuate his memory.
Initially we had decided on sponsoring the annual play. We all remembered
his enthusiasm for this event. I even spoke to the present G Sec. & Cul.
Sec. at XL on this. Unfortunately, with the new academic schedule, the Class
of '98 left for home when CRP '98 got over. Hence the play, I am told by my
juniors, is a non-event.
We then decided (at a party at Mumbai, with enough representatives of the
'95, '96, & '97 batches present) to install a bench, or seat, in front of
Dadu's. Dadu's does not have a place to sit, as you remember. Also, Dadu's
was one of Abhilash's (& all of ours') favourite haunts. So a bench at the
place would be functional, as well as poignant.
Some month's back I had sent an appeal for funds in this connection. The
minimum amount was Rs. 100/-. Payment could be made to some designated
contact persons in each metro. I had, in this connection, collected Rs.
4300/- (details given). Much more can & should be collected. Gurmeet Singh
Chahal, who goes to Jampot pretty often to meet his dealers has agreed to
meet Sarkar & PopC to clear the red tape. The insti's good offices will
ensure the construction is done honestly. We will try to monitor it as
effectively as possible. I am also writing to Sarkar & PopC in this
connection.
So let's start collecting again. You can pay the money to:
