People I Admire/ People I Miss

When I became an orientation instructor little did I know I would meet some of the finest people I would ever know. Each of the women I worked with each their own special qualities but all exhibited great kindness and thoughtfulness. Always.

In order of when I met them:

Dr. Barbara Hanniford. She's a dean in the College of Continuing Studies and she was my first faculty partner.

The qualities I admire most about Dr. Hanniford: professionalism and her genuine nature. A person thinks of a dean as a stuffy, blustery person who is hardly human. Nothing could be further from the truth with Dr. Hanniford. I was amazed at her balance between professionalism and compassion, and how naturally she could ease from one to the other.

How Dr. Hanniford has specifically helped me: She was understanding when I was a new student instructor. She always listened to things that were going on with me and showed genuine concern (how rare that is in a big college). She also expected a lot of me and that made me a better person.

Other: Dr. Hanniford is a fellow Greek.

Lauren Pernetti, Coordinator of University Orienation, Undergraduate Studies. I was lucky enough to have her choose me to be an orientation instructor trainer.

Qualities I admire most about Lauren: Her belief in people, knowing their value. Lauren is very enthusiastic about her job and wants students to succeed. She doesn't judge people but she intuitively knows what is good for them.

How Luaren has specifically helped me: Lauren really helped me when I was getting my grades up. She helped me by listening to my ideas and letting me try them. As important, she knew when to say nothing and let me figure it out.

Other: Lauren always knows when I am lying. She gives this sideways look and I know I am busted.

Donna Barberio. We were a training team.

Qualities I admire most about Donna: Donna has her stuff together. She is the consumate 90s woman. She will do very well for herself. She was very considerate and a good person to work with. The trainees really liked her and they all looked up to her.

How Donna specifically helped me: Donna was a real blessing because she believed in me and listened to my ideas. She was always supportive. I was lucky to get paired with her.

Other: We went to high school together though we didn't know each other.

Liz Boyer-Piatt, Advisor at Undergrad Programs, BSA.

Qualities I most admire about Liz: Where to start? She is probably the most blessed person I know (other than me). I never saw her get mad. She defines easy-going. She doesn't get upset about stupid things.

How Liz has specifically helped me: I consider her a friend (as I consider all my orientation compatriots). She doesn't judge either. She invited me over to her house which meant a lot to me.

Other: Con- She went to Brand "X" (U of Akron). Pro- She is Greek also. Also, her husband and I have similar taste in entertainment.

People I Miss

I have been lucky enough to meet many nice people. Some I'll never see again, this side of heaven.

I've met lots of people. Some are very concerned about what people think about them and always "spin" the old he-said-she-said. They don't want people to think badly about them. They're politicians.

This list is not about them.
I prefer the people who don't always have a story; genuine people. I like to see people acknowledge their vulnerable, human sides.
One example is Jesus. I can identify with the human Jesus who wept, more than the powerful, conquering Jesus.

Some people I've met aren't afraid to show their humanity.
Here is a partial list.

Todd "Chubby" Coleman- Without doubt he was my favorite fraternity brother. I never got to see him as much as I might like, as you know how day to day life can be.

Curt Floor- He is the best person I've ever met (excepting my friends and family of course).

Bill Weaver- A DeMolay brother, he is second.

Tim "Too-Round" Petrilla- He is a great guy. I was lucky enough hang out with him quite a bit in college.

Brian Keoszy- I worked with him at my first job- BK. A great guy. He's had a tough time in this world but he has shown stregnth to me, even if he didn't realize it.

That's it for now. If I forgot you, it is nothing personal. Send me an e mail and I'll put you up there.
