After graduating from College, Richard Nixon applied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for employment. He never received a reply. During his presidency, then F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover launched an investigation as to what had happened to Nixon's application. It was later determined that the position for which Nixon applied had been eliminated.

World War II: At the outbreak of the war, Nixon went to work briefly for the tire-rationing section of the Office of Price Administration in Washington, DC. Eight months later in August of 1942 he joined the Navy. Served in the Pacific Theater, on Bougainville Island, as a supply officer. Given the nickname of "Nick" by his fellow seamen.
