The WEB

A Guide For The Web-Phobic

First of all, most Universities have free web access available, and you can download it and take it home. Do it if you can.

At the University of Oklahoma, go to the Computer Store on main campus (It's off of Asp by the silver water tower, across from the union, $5.00 for everything). Start slowly. Don't expect to get it all in a minute. You will receive an instruction manual with the dowload-Read It!! You get a free E-Mail account too, and they'll give you set-up directions for that too. Don't be afraid to call them (325-info), they're pleasant, and no question is too stupid (believe me, I call them all the time! I couldn't figure out my password either!).

Okay, assuming you get hooked up, what now? The home page of the University comes up. Try something simple: find yourself in the directory. A scary thought, your name, address, and phone number are all on the net! If you're not in it, look up some of your friends. It also gives the E-Mail addresses for everyone (we'll get there).

Now let's move. There are a couple ways to move on the net. You can type the address to the site you want in the address window at the top of your page if you know it. Be mindful of spelling and punctuation! There are no spaces in addresses unless you see_ typeitalltogether. So, go type http://www.ou.law.edu; you should go to the OU Law homepage. To get back, click the back button on your screen.

The Web if full of links. Go back to the address for the law school, point at it, click once. Boing! You're at the other page. Come Back afterward, I have more stuff you need to know!!

Your E-Mail We all have a free E-Mail account here, so why aren't we using it? The professors have them too, so you can ask questions without ever leaving your house. This is very convenient for commuters. Find out your E-Mail address if you don't know it, you'll need it for what I am about to tell you. The University gives out E-Mail by using your name@ OU.edu…DULL! You can change it and still get your mail in the same place, FREE (the only price law students can afford!). Just Click HERE

You can also get more free E-Mail accounts. One site is hotmail. I have one there too, just in case the OU incoming mail server goes down (like last weekend).

For Free web sites so you can make a page (obviously any idiot can do it, I've been on-line for 1 week!) go to Geocities

For cool stuff to Download to your computer;

One of the first things you need is Netscape 4

download it-FREE.
