Escola de Belas Artes

School of Fine Arts

Artistic education was officially introduced in Brazil in 1816 with the creation of the Escola Real de Ciências, Artes e Ofícios,(The Imperial Academy of Fine Arts),thus definitively institutionalizing a unique system of artistic instruction which would shape the development of Brazilian Art in the years to come. As of 1890,the old Imperial Academy became the National School of Fine Arts, which was later incorporated by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro- UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro)and subsequently by the Universidade do Brasil(University of Brazil),in 1931 and 1937,respectively. In 1965,when its name was changed to Escola de Belas Artes(Scool of Fine Arts),it became part of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro-(Rio de Janeiro Federal University)-UFRJ.
