ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
"THE GREAT SOUTHWEST CLASSIC"
Saturday --- May 31

The GREAT SOUTHWEST CLASSIC is the most prestigious meet of the year. The top competitors from SEVEN southwestern states are invited to take part in the meet. Last year, Julie was "allowed" to enter the meet as an extra, at the last minute, and surprised them all by taking fourth place!
This year, she decided that the school record was more important than a slightly higher PR or a medal at the meet. So she took a gamble and made some DRASTIC changes in her form last week to better prepare herself for her new college career as a stronger athlete!

NOTE: There are five class levels of Arizona high schools.
Julie is in the 3-A Division.
According to the posted results of last week's state meets, Julie would have taken first place in all five divisions.
The Luke Greenway Meet pits the top 2-3 people of each division against each other.

REGIONAL MEET RESULTS AND AWARD

JULIE was awarded this gorgeous mirror, which says:

....Field Athlete of the Year"

REGIONAL FINALS IN DISCUS

Picture the worst dust storm you can think of....better yet, picture the scene in "Twister" where they drive INTO the tornado, and then picture a discus competition in the middle of it!!
Now picture three straight hours of it, gusting winds, dust breathed deeply into your lungs, grit in every pore, and the discus official trying over and over to get the throws completed.
People were huddling in and around cars in between throws....it was awful. But with the State Meet scheduled for 6 days later, there was no time to reschedule the meet.
Now that the EXCUSES are over.....picture Julie throwing a 120', 108' and an intentional scratch in the preliminaries. Then, in the finals, she threw a 130'1", a 130'6", and a final throw of 136'1"!!!!!

THAT'S a NEW PR by 1'3" !!!!!
GO JULIE !!!!!!!

AND
she broke the old meet record by 14 feet !!!!!!!

And to top it all off....
all the "experts" at the meet said it was a "tail wind"!!!!!
Imagine that!
